HISTORY OF CLONASLEE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION
The Clonaslee Community Development Association (formerly known as Clonaslee Community Council) was founded in 1972 following the organisation of a number of local individuals who had common interests. Muintir na Tire was the most suitable model for the development of the group as it encompassed all aspects of life within the community. From 1972 to date Clonaslee Community Development Association has consistently high levels of both financial and human resources into the development of Clonaslee and it's surrounds.
The following is a list of the CCDA's achievements and work to date:
- The first Water Schemes were set up by the Community Council;
- The raising of 400,000 Irish Punt for the construction of the Community Centre;
- The purchase and renovation of the former Church of Ireland which now accommodates the Heritage Centre;
- Facilitating a Laois County Council Branch Library at the Heritage Centre;
- Facilitating the Citizens Information Centre for Part-time activities in the Heritage Centre;
- The setting up of social services for senior citizens which provides outings, social evenings, annual dinner, etc;
- Running a very successful weekly "Lottery Draw" as a fundraising measure;
- Carrying out many environmental improvements in the area;
- Setting up and running a successful community playgroup;
- Providing valuable work experience and training opportunities for project participants;
- Developing local amenities and facilities including walks, Brittas Lake, and the Birr Road path;
- Providing ongoing social, recreational and cultural activities;
- Building strong relationships with all sectors of the community;
- Increasing the participation of all sectors at local level;
- Improving the entrance to the Annual Clonaslee Agricultural Show;
- Assisted with the establishment of a local Social Economy Project, the Slieve Bloom Garden Centre;
- In 2001 Clonaslee Community Development Association participated for the first time in the Community Initiative Awards;
- Clonaslee was recently selected as one of only two towns in County Laois to participate in the Village Design Statement Programme. This report has been compiled and once approved will inform the future work of Clonaslee Community Development Association.
