New in the district – Lonely?
Like to make new Friends? Want to get involved in local group?
Wish you had someone to travel with? Fed up watching T.V.?
If you said yes to any of the above now is the time to think of joining Irish Country Women’s Association. This is the oldest women’s organization in the country, founded in 1910 and still in existence today. Obviously the needs of modern women are different from those of the early twenties, but the principle is the same - Friendship, Fellowship and Shared Interests.
The women of I.C.A. have great fun at meetings, enjoy outings and form a network of friends wherever they go. Our Guilds have a varied programme depending on the interests of the members. Some Guilds love painting and sketching, others enjoy Creative Writing, Effective Speaking and some want to keep the tradition of Crafts – Knitting and Needlework. We have yoga classes, keep-fit etc. many of our members have, through our network, learned to use computers and keep up to date with modern technology.
Many of our ladies are thankful to I. C. A. for helping them to gain confidence to go back into the workplace. “Being a member of I.C. A. was the best thing I ever did in recent years” is a common comment from members. We have a Guild in almost every part of Laois. We will hold “open nights” so that you can come and see if it’s for YOU!

The Clonaslee guild of I.C.A is a vibrant example of all that is good about I.C.A.
Fundraising for worthy causes such as the Special Olympics, Daffodil Day, Cancer Care Coffee Morning and the Central Remidial Clinic is one of the more visable activities. We are also available to assist with catering for funnerals and various events held in the Community Centre.
The guild enjoys a good working relationship with other organisations in the area such as the Wheelchair Association, Clonaslee Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, The Clonaslee Show Society and Clonaslee Community Council.
2004 marked the sixtieth year since the foundation of the Clonaslee guild of the I.C.A. A special mass was held to commemorate this special occasion and tribute was paid to P.D. Brickley who was instrumental in encouraging and supporting the founder members.
While I.C.A. continues to encourage excellence in cookery, baking and handcrafts it also encourages its members to develop all aspects of their personality and talents. Classes in the past few years have been as varied as are all aspects if I.C.A. Aqua-aerobics,Pilates,Decoupage,Flower Arranging, Hair Care, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation and a beginners course in Computer Use to name but a few.
There is something for everyone in I.C.A. no matter what your talents! The social aspect of the guild is as important as its educational aspect. Many enjoyable nights have been spent whether at the Grehound racing in Mullingar, enjoying music in the Dunamaise Theatre in Portlaoise or dining in Kinnity Castle and enjoying the craic and the company of the friendly ladies in Clonaslee Guild of the I.C.A. New members are always welcome and unlike many associations nowadays the membership fee is very modest.
